Here's What To Expect When Replacing Your Windshield

Replacing your windshield is a relatively straightforward process, but if you’ve never had it don’t before, you might be wondering what to expect.

If you have a large crack, chip, or gash in your windshield, it’s time to book an appointment to replace it. An auto glass technician can save the day and restore the safety of your vehicle in no time.

Here’s what you can expect from the windshield replacement process.

When Is a Windshield Replacement Necessary?

Minor rock chips and cracks can be repaired without replacing the entire windshield. When cracks are larger than three inches and chips are larger than a half-inch, a windshield replacement is necessary. If the cracks splinter to the edge of the windshield, replacement is also needed. Old windshields that are pitted or hazed should also be replaced.

Chips and cracks are much easier to repair when the damage has recently occurred, so don’t delay if you notice any damage to your windshield.

How Is Windshield Replacement Done?

  1. Remove the seal – The first step of replacing a car’s windshield is to remove the trim surrounding the glass. The trim is the caulking agent that holds the windshield in place. A razor is often used to loosen the glass and remove the seal.
  1. Remove the windshield – Once the seal is removed, your auto glass expert will carefully take out the old, damaged windshield. With your old windshield removed, the rest of the windshield replacement procedure can take place.
  1. Clean out the pinch weld – The pinch weld is the small gap between the windshield and the body of the car. This holds or pinches the edges of the windshield to keep it in place. Before installing a new windshield, this area must first be cleaned out. Dirt, debris, and dust can build up in the pinch weld area over time. Cleaning out this area will prepare it to fully hold the new windshield glass.
  1. Apply urethane – After the seal and glass have been removed, the windshield installation area will be stripped down to the metal frame. Next, your glass technician will coat the metal parts of the frame with fresh urethane. Urethane acts as a strong adhesive that holds the windshield in place against the frame. This substance must be applied evenly and quickly, so it doesn’t dry before the new windshield can be installed.
  1. Install the new windshield – With the frame clean and properly installed, it’s time to install the new glass. Your auto technician will measure your windshield frame to ensure the new one matches the precise dimensions. The glass is placed to fit within the pinch weld and pushed into place. Once correctly positioned, suction cups are held in place for several minutes. When the urethane is well set, the suction cups are removed, and your vehicle will be ready to drive.

What Other Parts Need To Be Replaced?

No one loves car repairs, but if you’re already in the shop, here are a few parts of your windshield you might want to take a peek at:

  • Wiper blades – Since you’re already having your windshield replaced, it might be a suitable time to swap out your wiper blades. Many experts recommend replacing your windshield wipers every six to 12 months– more if you live in a particularly rainy or snowy climate.

Aside from time, you’ll want to replace your wiper blades if they are streaking, warping, or making loud noises while in use. Wiper blades play a critical role in helping you see through your front window and rearview mirror, so it’s best to err on the side of caution and switch them out sooner rather than later.

  • Weatherstripping – While it’s not always necessary to replace the weather stripping surrounding the windshield, it’s quite common. If it is stretched out, morphed, or otherwise damaged, it’s a sound idea to remove and replace it.
  • Urethane – As mentioned previously, urethane is responsible for providing a high-strength bond and sealing the windshield. This will always need to be replaced during a new windshield installation.

Windshield Replacement Aftercare

So, you have a new windshield – now what? Here are our top recommendations for what to do next so your windshield can perform at its best:

  • Inspect the installation – After the installation is complete, inspect your windshield for any gaps or bubbles around the seal. An incorrectly installed windshield could pop out in an accident and cause harm to the vehicle’s occupants. Next, take your car for a quick spin and listen for any air noise around the perimeter.
  • Ask about warranties – Most auto glass companies offer a warranty alongside their services. Make sure you comprehend the terms of the warranty and how to file a claim if you need repairs.
  • Take it easy – The first 24 hours after a glass installation are critical for its overall performance. During this time, avoid any harsh impacts, such as slamming doors. We also recommend cracking your side windows about a quarter-inch to prevent air pressure build-up in your car.
  • Steer clear of the car wash – After receiving a new windshield, do not take your car through a car wash for at least 24 hours. The more time you can give the urethane seal to dry, the better. If you need a car wash, make sure you take care of it before your installation appointment.
